"I feel that a co-op or internship experience is essential for all undergraduates, regardless of major. It doesn't matter what your plans are after your bachelor’s degree, having a real-world experience behind you helps put you ahead of the competition. Both employers and graduate schools are looking for students who have experience in their field of study (nowadays coursework is just not enough). As a Physics major, there was no established co-op or internship program for me, so I sought out both an internship and a co-op and worked out the details at The University of Akron. Internships have been done before with a Physics major, but co-op was a new thing for both my department and the Center for Career Management but everyone worked together and made it happen. I know that if I would have not have had these experiences I would not be where I am today.”

Employee and former co-op student, NASA Glenn Research Center

“The career center has been instrumental in helping me find a position at an excellent company. From solidifying my resume to preparing for interviews, I have learned many valuable skills. I would highly recommend getting to know everyone in the office.”
Joe Patrick
Employee and former internship student, Cintas

“The Education Expo was where I had the opportunity to sit down and talk to the superintendent for Avon Local School District and two months later I received a phone call from the high school principal requesting another interview. I was one of ten candidates for the position and they offered me the job and I gladly accepted. I don't think I would have been as lucky if your office didn't provide me with such a great opportunity to get my resume out to different school districts at the Expo. Anyone who doesn't take FULL advantage of the services your office provides will find himself or herself scrambling at the last minute to find a job. I'm glad I don't have to worry about that anymore.”

Avon High School English Teacher

"Upon graduating from the University of Akron, I remembered the mission statement from the College of Business. This is located on every wall in the building and I passed by everyday, never giving it much thought. The CBA’s mission is: To prepare competent and responsible business leaders. Looking back on my education and now forward on my career, I now realize that a key factor to success is a strong education. During my college career at the University of Akron, Career Services helped prepare me for my future. The center helped me develop a professional resume, enroll me in extracurricular activities such as the Society for Human Resource Management, and eventually, find me an internship. I took the internship with Dominion East Ohio in the summer of my senior year in Dominion’s Human Resource Department. The internship was a perfect match and they offered me a full-time position upon graduating in December of 2002. The internship gave me a glimpse into what the workforce looked like and helped me apply the knowledge I learned in the classroom to my new position. I currently work in Dominion’s Call Center and service 130 employees as their Human Resource Generalist. I absolutely love my job and have my college experience at the University of Akron to thank for it."

Employee and former internship student, Dominion East Ohio

“I have recently received and subsequently accepted an offer from Mantaline Corporation. I secured my initial interview through the Center for Career Management, and for that I am eternally grateful. You provide a valuable service to both students and graduates, and I only hope that everyone appreciates your hard work as much as I do.”
Rob Lynch
Employee, Mantaline Corporation
