This class includes the study of medical prefixes, suffixes, word roots, and combining forms. Pronunciation, spelling, and common abbreviations will be emphasized. The body systems will be studied including anatomical as well as symptomatic and diagnostic terms, along with common tests and procedures relating to each system. Common operative and therapeutic terms will also be introduced. Upon successful completion of this course you will have basic understanding of medical terminology. MEDICAL CODING
Are you interested in pursuing a career in the medical field as a professional medical coder? This entry-level course is specifically designed to give you a solid foundation in medical coding. The fundamentals of medical coding include knowledge of how to use and understand the coding guidelines of the procedure and diagnosis coding books. In addition to a solid review of the contents of the coding books you will be given hands-on coding exercises to be completed in class and at home. Text Book: 2009 CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) Professional Edition and 2009 ICD-9-CM for Physicians Volumes 1 & 2. Each textbook is approximately $80 and will be available at the UA bookstore.

STERILE PROCESSING/CENTRAL SERVICE TECHNOLOGY
Sterile Processing/Central Service is a field dedicated to supporting the healthcare industry with supplies and equipment. You will learn sterilization practices and procedures that will prepare you to become a Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician. Topics include microbiology, infection control, decontamination, manual and mechanical cleaning, instrument inspection and assembly, methods of disinfection and sterilization, sterile storage, inventory control, material management, and distribution. Class format will include lecture, discussion, demonstration and practice. Clinical experience at sterile processing /central service departments in the Akron area may be offered. Upon completion, you will be eligible for the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) Exam. Material cost is approximately $180.
