Center for Conflict Management
Expectations
Our mission is to assist you in better understanding the nature of conflict
and the various ways we might prevent, resolve, or reduce the harms associated
with conflict—from interpersonal to international. In order to accomplish this
together, you should choose which one of our programs you are interested in
pursuing and then click on ‘Join Us’ to find our one-page application form.
How to Start: Fill this out and schedule a meeting with the Director as
soon as possible to discuss your goals. Giving him your filled out form is the
first step, but to qualify for scholarship consideration (scholarships are
awarded each spring for the following academic year) you must do more than meet
with the Director early in your academic career and fill out this form. You must
take the core required classes in conflict management first. Only if you have
taken (or are currently taking) these classes, can you be considered part of our
community and a candidate for scholarship funds. So meet the Director as soon as
possible and take the core classes first.
Substitutions: The Center Director does not approve substitutions for
core classes. We will consider substitutions for electives on a case-by-case
basis, though we strongly discourage substituting more than one class.
Substitutions for electives must be approved by the Director (and for the Minor
they must also be approved by the Dean) and the burden is on you to make the
case that the proposed course will offer as much educational value and conflict
management emphasis as the class listed on the electives list. In the rare event
that a core class has not been offered in two consecutive academic years, we
will consider substitutions for a core class as well, so it is up to you to plan
your schedules early enough to complete the core classes when they are offered.
Substituting a class taken at another university for an elective is possible,
but discouraged.
