Meet our Professors

Dr. Chengxin Zhao

Professor Chengxin Zhao, Ph.D., is an associate dean and associate professor in the International School for Chinese Language and Culture in Henan University, China. During his teaching career, he has taught courses such as Primary Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, Advanced Chinese, and Chinese Traditional Cultures. His research interests are in acquisition of second language, contrastive analysis between Chinese and English.

His recent publications include: 

A Contrastive Analysis of the Demonstrative Reference Words in Chinese and English.  Publishing House of Henan University, 2009.6.  
Vivid Memories – Selected Readings from BBC (English-Chinese). Publishing House of Henan University, 2008.4.  

 

 Kang Li M.A. 

Instructor Kang Li M.A. is an instructor in the International School for Chinese Language and Culture in Henan University, China. She has been teaching Chinese for 20 years and has taught courses such as Mondern Chinese Language, Spoken Chinese and Teach Chinese as a Foreign Language. She has taught Chinese language and traditional Chinese culture at Yat Sen Secondary School in Fiji for three years.                                            

Her research interests are in linguistics, applied linguistics and teaching Chinese as a second language.

 Run Guo M.A

    

Visiting Instructor Run Guo M.A. is an instructor in the International School for Chinese Language and Culture in Henan University, China. During her teaching career, she has taught courses such as Primary Chinese, Intermediate Chinese, Advanced Chinese, and Chinese Traditional Cultures.

Goals of the Institute

The Confucius Institute at The University of Akron is a partnership between UA and Henan University in China. According to the agreement signed between Hanban, the Office of Chinese Language Council International, and the University of Akron, the major missions of the Confucius Institute include:

  • teach Chinese language using a variety of methods;
  • train teachers to teach Chinese language in primary schools, high schools and colleges;
  • administer the Chinese Proficiency Test and other tests to certify teachers' ability to teach Chinese as a foreign language;
  • teach Chinese courses of various types in various areas for individuals who are not registered students of the University of Akron;
  • sponsor academic activities and Chinese competitions;
  • show Chinese movies and TV programs;
  • provide consulting services for individuals wishing to study in China; and
  • provide reference materials for the educational and other professional individuals.
