Dr. Hefeng Guan

Professor Hefeng Guan


Professor Hefeng Guan, Ph.D., is an associate dean and associate professor in the School of Foreign Languages, Henan University. From December 2004 to August 2005 she worked as a visiting scholar in the English Department of the University of Toronto, Canada. During her teaching career of over 24 years, she has taught courses such as Intensive Reading, Extensive Reading, Advanced English, and Selected Readings in American Literature.

Her research interests are in British and American fiction. Her recent publications include:

  • Seeking Identity between Worlds-A Study of Chinese American Women's Literature (Henan University Press, Kaifeng, 2007),
  • Pronunciation of American English (Aviation Industry Press, Beijing, 2001),
  • "From a Silent Lamb to an Independent Goddess-An Analysis of the Progress in Winnie's Subjective Awareness" (Journal of Huanghe S&T University, Vol. 4, 2006),
  • "Women's Life Between Worlds-On Women's Images in Woman Warrior" (Henan University Journal, Vol. 6, 2003),
  • "Rebellion and Protest-A Thematic Study of Works by Chinese American Women Novelists" (Foreign Languages In Fujian, Vol. 4, 2002), and
  • "Betrayer or Inheritor of the Patriarchal Cultural Tradition-On Defoe's Viewpoint of Women" (Henan University Journal, Vol. 6, 2001).

Lei Zhao

Lecturer Lei Zhao

Lei Zhao, M.A., is a lecturer in Henan University. She has taught courses such as Chinese comprehensive skills and spoken Chinese in Henan University since 2004 to students from the United States, Italy, Russia and other countries.

Her research focuses on the exchanges of Chinese literature and language between China and other regions.

Goals of the Institute

The Confucius Institute at The University of Akron is a partnership between UA and Henan University in China. According to the agreement signed between Hanban, the Office of Chinese Language Council International, and the University of Akron, the major missions of the Confucius Institute include:

  • teach Chinese language using a variety of methods;
  • train teachers to teach Chinese language in primary schools, high schools and colleges;
  • administer the Chinese Proficiency Test and other tests to certify teachers' ability to teach Chinese as a foreign language;
  • teach Chinese courses of various types in various areas for individuals who are not registered students of the University of Akron;
  • sponsor academic activities and Chinese competitions;
  • show Chinese movies and TV programs;
  • provide consulting services for individuals wishing to study in China; and
  • provide reference materials for the educational and other professional individuals.
