Research InterestsI study the ecology of streams and rivers. My work is set in the context of addressing human affects on stream ecosystems and their native organisms, and aims to contribute to better-informed conservation and stewardship. I use techniques grounded in historical ecology, landscape and community ecology, conservation and restoration ecology, and resource management. I am particularly interested in whether and how documented shifts in water quality translate into shifts in macroinvertebrate community structure. Currently, I am investigating the relationships between in-stream community structure and measures of stream ecosystem function with Dr. Amy Marcarelli at Idaho State University. Current projects in my laboratory include the design of a long-term real-time water quality monitoring network for streams on the Bath Nature Preserve, and the development of a habitat-based biological prediction model for use in stream restoration projects.
