Admission Information

Applicants should hold a B.A. or B.S. (or the foreign equivalent) in chemistry, biochemistry or a related field. Whatever their field, applicants should have a significant background in chemistry and a 3.00 or better grade point average. The University of Akron Department of Chemistry expects graduate students to have specific previous training, including one year of both general and organic chemistry complete with laboratory experience, and, preferably, training in analytical, physical and inorganic chemistry.

Students are encouraged to begin studies in the fall semester. However, entrance into the program in January is possible. To ensure consideration, all application materials should be submitted by mid-March. Students will receive a written response within a few weeks after receipt of application materials.

Graduate Record Examination scores are not a University requirement for admission; however, the scores can significantly strengthen an application. Students should have the GRE scores sent directly to the Department of Chemistry.

Complete the on-line graduate school application, and send the remaining application materials (Research Interest Questionnaire, official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and TOEFL score for international students) to:

Financial Assistance

Students entering with a B.S., M.S. or equivalent degree in chemistry will find financial support is generally available, on a competitive basis, for two years toward completion of a M.S. degree and up to a total of six years of support toward completion of a Ph.D.

Sources of support for full-time graduate students include teaching and research assistantships and industrial fellowships. Teaching assistantships involve recitations, grading or laboratory instruction, typically for approximately 20 hours per week. Along with an assistantship, the student receives a full-tuition waiver.

In addition, a number of named scholarships/fellowships, including the Coleman, D’ianni, Livigni, Grant and Flexsys graduate fellowships, are awarded each year to outstanding applicants. These provide additional financial support above the base stipend. Each year, a series of awards provided by private and corporate donors are presented to graduate students who have excelled in the areas of research and teaching.
