The doctoral program directly benefits the State of Ohio by training Ph.D. graduates in fields that are particularly relevant to the Ohio economy. Notwithstanding the national and international character of modern science and technology, about half of the Chemistry Department’s Ph.D. graduates go on to take professional positions within the State of Ohio.

Since the development of the tire industry in Akron before and during the second world war, northeast Ohio has become nationally known for its concentration of polymer and related chemical industries. Research in the Department of Chemistry in macromolecular materials and in the spectroscopy of those materials seeds the further growth of those important Ohio industries.

As we begin the twenty-first century, we are moving beyond an industrial economy and into the era of a knowledge-based economy. The focus areas of the Ph.D. Program in Chemistry serve to generate new knowledge in key economic areas and to provide trained scientists who will become the engine of Ohio’s knowledge economy.
