Minors In Economics

You may have already decided on major other than economics. If you have done well in Principles, however, you should consider a minor in economics. You know about "product differentiation": you can differentiate yourself from other graduates in your major with a minor in economics that demonstrates your analytical ability. Analytical skills are scarce and are valued by employers.

The economics minor can satisfy concentration and specialty requirements in the Colleges of Education and Business Administration. In addition, students pursuing professional programs, such as engineering or nursing, who plan to advance in their careers by moving into the ranks of management will find an economics minor valuable; and, students with majors within the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences may find that their education is enhanced by the minor.

A minor does not require a large number of extra courses and no extra pre-requisites. You need 18 credits in economics and you already have 6 of them with your Principles courses. The department offers two minor options, both with flexible choices of courses. Students whose primary interest in economics is in the area of employee-employer relationships or human resource policy should consider the minor in Labor Economics. Students whose interests in economics lay elsewhere are advised to select the minor in Economics.
