James Egan's current scholarly and teaching interests involve Renaissance prose, Milton, satire, fantasy and science fiction, and Gothic. Publications include The Inward Teacher and many journal articles and reviews on such figures as Milton, Marvell, Donne, Defoe, Joyce Carol Oates, Shirley Jackson and Stephen King. He has been awarded grants from The Newberry Library and the American Philosophical Society and is an Associate Editor of Seventeenth-Century News. He has participated in over forty academic conferences on a variety of topics. His service to the English Department includes administrative and advising work in the honors program, the graduate program and, presently, the careers program for majors.
