Janet Marting began her career as a poet. She has been widely published in such journals as The New Orleans Review, The Red Cedar Review, Descant, The Akros Review, and The Centennial Review. Her chapbook is entitled The Heart’s Geographer (Calliope Press, 1978). Her Ph.D. focused on composition theory and pedagogy. A former Director of Composition, her work has appeared in Dialogue: A Journal for Writing Specialists; Teaching English in the Two-Year College; Writing Program Administration; Journal of Research and Development in Education; College English; Writing on the Edge; and The CEA Forum. Marting is the author of Commitment, Voice, and Clarity: An Argument Rhetoric and Reader and has compiled four readers: Making a Living: A Real World Reader; The Voice of Reflection: A Writer's Reader; From the Cradle to the Grave: Classic Essays on Coming of Age and Aging; and The Family Tree: Classic Essays on Family and Ancestors. She is interested in creative non-fiction, especially memoir. As Leslie Marmon Silko writes, "I will tell you something about stories. They aren't just entertainment. Don't be fooled. They are all we have. You don’t have anything if you don't have the stories."
