Arthur L. Palacas: literary linguistics, discourse semantics, linguistics and composition, African-American vernacular English and composition. To get specific, I am interested in the linguistics of subjectivity and its formal representation ("Attribution Semantics: Linguistic Worlds and Point of View." Discourse Processes 16 (1993), 239-277). I also think about the pragmatic and semantic role of parentheticals and the related question of voice in composition ("Parentheticals and Personal Voice." Written Communication 6 (1989), 506-527.) I have a special interest in the problems African-American students may face in English composition ("Liberating American Ebonics from Euro-English" College English 63 (2001), 326-52) and, in general, the problem of English diversity in the classroom. Of personal-political-academic interest, I would like to see the Christian view of life which is at the base of the academy's existence play an accepted role among the diversities of the contemporary university scene.
