American Society of Public Administration (ASPA)
American Society of Public Administration or ASPA is established to professionalize the public service, to keep members on the cutting edge of good government, and to help answer the enduring question of how to make government work better. Generally, ASPA's goals are to improve the effectiveness of democratic governance by positively influencing public policy and management and the ethical performance of public services worldwide, to foster interest and pride in public service by effectively communicating its nature, honor and challenge and to strengthen ASPA as the professional organization that covers the whole spectrum of public service an d capitalizes on its diversity. National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA)
The National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration is an institutional membership organization which exists to promote excellence in public service education. The membership includes U.S. university programs in public affairs, public policy, public administration and nonprofit management. ICMA is the professional and educational organization for chief appointed managers, administrators, and assistants in cities, towns, counties, and regional entities throughout the world. Since 1914, ICMA has provided technical and management assistance, training, and information resources to its members and the local government community. The management decisions made by ICMA's nearly 8,000 members affect more than 100 million individuals in thousands of communities--from small towns with populations of a few hundred to metropolitan areas serving several million. National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA)
The National Academy of Public Administration is the preeminent organization dedicated to improving the performance of governance systems-the network of public institutions, nonprofit organizations, and private companies that share in the implementation of public policy. As an independent, nonprofit organization chartered by Congress, the Academy responds to specific requests from public agencies and non-government organizations. The Academy also promotes discourse on emerging trends in governance through its Standing Panels and with external funding. NAPA's Web Page
Urban Affairs Association (UAA)
The Urban Affairs Association is the international professional organization for urban scholars, researchers, and public service providers. UAA exists to encourage the dissemination of information about urbanism and urbanization, to support the development of university education, research, and service programs in urban affairs, and to provide leadership in fostering urban affairs as a professional and academic field. The Presidential Management Internship (PMI) Program was established by Executive Order in 1977 to attract to the Federal service outstanding individuals from a wide variety of academic disciplines who have an interest in, and commitment to, a career in the analysis and management of public policies and programs. By drawing graduate students from diverse social and cultural backgrounds, the PMI Program provides a continuing source of trained men and women to meet the future challenges of public service. Pi Alpha Alpha (PAA)
Pi Alpha Alpha is the national honor society formed to recognize and promote excellence in the study and practice of public affairs and administration. In its constitution, the organization dedicates itself to encourage and recognize outstanding scholarship and accomplishment in public affairs and administration, to promote the advancement of education and practice in the art and science of public affairs and administration, and to foster integrity, professionalism, and creative performance in the conduct of governmental and related public service activities. PAA membership identifies those with the highest performance levels in educational programs preparing them for public service careers. PAA honorary membership identifies those whose careers have best advanced the ideals of "integrity, professionalism, and creative performance" in public service. The National Honor Society for Public Administration, Pi Alpha Alpha, recognizes and promotes scholarship, excellence, and leadership in the field of public administration. Pi Alpha Alpha is dedicated to foster integrity, professionalism, and creative performance in the conduct of governmental and related public service activities.
The University of Akron established its Pi Alpha Alpha chapter in 1993. To become a member of Pi Alpha Alpha, you must first be nominated by the PAUS chapter and second, you need to accept the nomination and pay the dues. To be eligible for nomination, students must achieve a grade point average of 3.8 or better and have completed at least 24 credit hours of coursework towards their MPA.
