Graduate Programs in Political Science

Welcome to Graduate Studies in Political Science at The University of Akron. The department awards two graduate degrees in Political Science: The Master of Arts in Political Science (MA) and the Master of Applied Politics (MAP). Both programs allow students the opportunity to develop their research skills and the chance to work closely with renowned faculty members in their field of interest.

The MA degree allows students to specialize in American, Comparative, International, or Criminal Justice. Students who proceed to doctoral studies will find that the knowledge they acquire from our graduate program to be extremely beneficial. Our graduates have continued their studies at Albany-SUNY, Binghamton-SUNY, Claremont Graduate School, Indiana University, The Ohio State University, The University of Iowa, The University of Maryland, Texas A&M University, Washington University in St Louis, and the University of Wisconsin. Furthermore, our emphasis on research strategies and methodological questions provide students entering the work force with a valuable set of marketable skills to pursue careers in business, law, journalism, education, occupations in government and non-governmental organizations.

In addition to the traditional MA, we also offer a distinctive Masters of Applied Politics degree in association with The Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron. Our MAP degree provides students with professional training in elections and party management. MAP graduates have gone on to manage campaigns, run for political office, join polling and fundraising firms, and start their own consulting firms.

In 2006, The Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics along with University’s nationally recognized School of Law, developed a joint degree allowing students to receive both the Juris Doctorate degree and a Master of Applied Politics. We believe that in today’s world, students correctly see a law degree as an entry to the world of politics. Combined with the professional training attained through the MAP, this program will provide students with exciting job opportunities.
