Doctor of Pharmacy Program Overview - NEOUCOP
Accreditation Status
The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Pharmacy (NEOUCOP) was given approval from the Ohio Board of Regents to offer a Doctor of Pharmacy degree in November, 2005 and has been awarded Precandidate accreditation status by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) during their January, 2007 meeting of the ACPE Board of Directors.
Program Overview
If your professional calling is to provide excellent patient care as part of a health care team, you’ve come to the right place. Promoting good teamwork among health care providers has become a national priority. The NEOUCOP has answered this call by developing an innovative educational experience for our pharmacy students. Our groundbreaking curriculum allows pharmacy and medical students from the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) to learn side-by-side and to foster the close working relationships needed in clinical and community settings.
Studies have shown that well-functioning teams improve patient outcomes and reduce medical errors - and skilled pharmacists are an integral part of health care teams. Since practitioners are expected to work together in clinical settings, fostering good teamwork and communication skills from the very moment professionals begin training is vitally important.
The importance of communication is one of "Five Cs" stressed throughout the NEOUCOP curriculum. In addition to communication, the Five Cs include: competence, caring, character and community. Ohio citizens have told us they want health care professionals who are skilled and competent at what they do and who show empathy and compassion to them and their loved ones. They want health care providers who speak to them and who have the communication skills needed to be effective practitioners. They also demand that their care providers be professional and have the personal character needed to make sound, ethical decisions. And, they want them to be engaged in the communities in which they live and work.
In addition to our unique curriculum and emphasis on the Five Cs, NEOUCOP's extensive educational network sets it apart from other colleges of pharmacy. NEOUCOP has partnered with The University of Akron, Kent State University, Youngstown State University and Cleveland State University. Preferential admissions agreements allow students to complete their pre-pharmacy studies at one of these universities and then apply to the four-year NEOUCOP program. Qualified students from other colleges and universities also will be accepted. NEOUCOP's four-year professional program culminates with the awarding of the doctor of pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.)
Our clinical educational partners include hospitals throughout northeast Ohio, community pharmacy and other clinical practice settings, as well as two boards of health. Additionally, we work closely with community clinics throughout the region. These partnerships allow NEOUCOP students to experience health care in a variety of settings - from major teaching hospitals to community-based centers. Additionally, our basic science campus in Rootstown, Ohio, offers state-of-the-art lecture halls and laboratories where our students work closely with faculty and fellow students.
Applicants for admission to the PharmD Program at NEOUCOP must complete at least two years of preprofessional coursework, earning a minimum of 72 semester hours in various disciplines. Please visit Pharmacy Admissions for additional admissions requirements.
