Accelerated BS/MS Accounting Program

The Program: The accelerated BS/MSA program allows outstanding, full-time accounting students to earn both BS and MS degrees by completing 150 semester hours of coursework, which is the minimum number of credit hours required to sit for the CPA exam in Ohio and most other states. All students in this program will complete 30 credits of graduate coursework to fulfill the requirements for the master’s degree, nine of which will be taken during the senior year. The program will also provide students with funding opportunities for the fifth year through graduate assistantships, professional internships, and scholarships.

Who Should Apply? Outstanding accounting majors who plan to sit for the CPA exam and want to earn both their bachelor’s and master’s degree by completing 150 credit hours of course work.

Why Should I Be Interested? The obvious advantage is that you will earn both your BS and MS degrees in exactly the number of hours required to sit for the CPA exam, but numerous other compelling reasons also exist. You will be attending classes with equally committed and motivated peers. The quality of students in this program should make it a top choice among recruiters. You will receive professional and academic guidance from faculty within the School of Accountancy. You will be eligible to participate in a professional internship which will not only help to fund your fifth year of school, but will also provide you with invaluable work experience.

What are the Admission Requirements? Because the number of students admitted to the program will be limited, admission into this program is not guaranteed. However, to be eligible, for acceptance into the program, a student must earn at least a B in 6200:301 Cost Management and Enterprise Resource Planning, 6200:320 Accounting Information Systems, 6200:321 Intermediate Accounting I, and 6200:322 Intermediate Accounting II and earn a 3.0 or higher GPA in accounting courses, in business courses, and in all University of Akron courses. Students in the program are not required to take the GMAT. Once admitted, all students must continue to maintain minimum GPAs of 3.0 in accounting, business, and overall.

When Do I Apply? You should indicate your interest as soon as possible by completing a plan change form in the College of Business Administration’s Undergraduate Advising Office. By completing the plan change, you will be given pre-admission status in the program. (Pre-admission status does not guarantee formal admission into the program). After you complete the plan change form, you will be added to the BS/MSA mailing list and will receive updates about the program. You will also be invited to attend information sessions and informal gatherings. You will be monitored closely and be given professional accounting advice through the School of Accountancy. Students in this program will be expected to attend school on a full-time basis and to complete their coursework in a relatively lockstep manner in order to graduate within the five year period. Therefore, it is important to get guidance as soon as possible.

When Can I Be Formally Admitted to the Program? To receive official acceptance into the program, in addition to satisfying the admission requirements outlined above, students must also
provide two letters of recommendation from CBA faculty and apply to and be accepted into the Graduate School before the start of their senior year. Once accepted into the program, students must earn and maintain a 3.0 or better GPA (business, accounting, and overall) to stay in the program. Students who are not able to do so will complete the regular bachelor's program instead of the accelerated BS/MSA program.

How may I obtain more information about the program? A list of course requirements is available under Graduate Programs in Business. For more information, contact Dr. Sharon Kimmell at skimmell@uakron.edu or (330 972-6088).
