Jerome E. Apple, J.D., MTax, CPA, has been an Instructor in the School of Accountancy since 1982. Mr. Apple was a partner with Moore Stephens Apple from 1969-1996 and was employed in public accounting with the national accounting firm of Grant Thornton from 1966-1969. Mr. Apple teaches such courses as Corporate Tax I, Advanced Individual Income Tax, and S-Corporations. In addition to his teaching, Mr. Apple currently serves as Finance Director for the City of Fairlawn.

Peggy S. Beistel, LL.M (Tax), is a Lecturer in the School of Accountancy. She has practiced for several years as a tax attorney in such firms as Kohrman Jackson & Krantz; Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs; and Squire, Sanders & Dempsey. She also worked in banking for 15 years prior to starting her legal career. Ms. Beistel holds an undergraduate degree in accounting. She teaches Tax Accounting.

Richard W. Burke, J.D., is a Lecturer in the School of Accountancy. He joined the law firm of Brennan Manna & Diamond in 2003, after practicing for several years with Stark and Knoll. He is recognized by various magazines as one of the best lawyers in America in the areas of Trusts and Estates. He specializes
in such areas as asset protection and taxation, estate planning, and estate administration. He serves on the Board of Directors of several companies. Mr. Burke teaches Estate and Gift Taxation, as well as Estate Planning.

Steven A. Dimengo, J.D., MTax, CPA, is Lecturer in the School of Accountancy. He joined the law firm of Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP, in 1989 and was elected a shareholder in 1994. He is recognized by various magazines as one of the best lawyers in America and as one of the super lawyers in Ohio. He has extensive experience in the areas of sales and use tax, and is a frequent writer and speaker on topics related to sales and use tax in Ohio. Mr. Dimengo teaches State and Local Taxation.

Richard J. Kovach, J.D. is the C. Blake McDowell, Jr. Professor of Law at The University of Akron’s School of Law. He earned his J.D. from Harvard Law School and has practiced with the law firm of Brouse & McDowell in Akron. Mr. Kovach writes extensively in the field of federal taxation and his articles have appeared in several highly respected law and taxation journals. He teaches Qualified Pensions and Profit Sharing.

David J. Lewis, J.D., CPA, is a Lecturer in the School of Accountancy. Recognized as one of the super lawyers of Ohio, Mr. Lewis is a shareholder in the law firm, Buckingham, Doolittle & Burroughs, LLP. He joined the firm in 1987, and specializes in taxation. He has significant experience in advocating clients’ needs before the IRS on civil tax examinations, appeals, and judicial proceedings. Mr. Lewis teaches Tax Practice and Procedure.

Alvin H. Lieberman, JD, CPA, is Associate Professor of Accounting in the School of Accountancy. He is one of the founders of the MTax program and has taught Income Taxation of Decedents, Estates & Trusts and Estate & Gift Taxation. He has served as the program’s coordinator since inception. He organizes the National and International conferences each fall.

Janet E. Mosebach, Ph.D., MTX, CPA is an Assistant Professor in the School of Accountancy. She has 10 years of public accounting experience, first with Plante and Moran in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where she focused in the tax area, and more recently with KPMG in Norfolk, Virginia, where she was a Senior Manager in the tax department. Dr. Mosebach teaches a variety of the MTax core courses such as Tax Research, Corporate Taxation, and Tax Accounting. Dr. Mosebach is also active in various tax research projects. Her most recent article on the tax effects of alternative federal health care proposals appears in the August 3 issue of Tax Notes.

Michael F. Urse, J.D., C.P.A, is a Lecturer in the School of Accountancy. He is a partner in the Cleveland office of PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he specializes in international tax services. Mr. Urse has 17 years of international tax experience serving numerous U.S. foreign-based multinationals. He is the firm’s international tax leader for Ohio and also serves as the national leader of the firm’s foreign tax credit team. He has worked extensively on foreign acquisition structuring and financing, with a focus on Europe. Mr. Urse has published several articles on international tax topics. He teaches International Tax.

Carol Ann Szczepanik, LLM (Tax), is the Senior Attorney (Criminal Tax), Office of Chief Counsel, Internal Revenue Service in Cleveland where she acts as the legal advisor to the Criminal Investigation field. She is involved in all aspects of tax crime and money laundering investigations. She works closely with the Economic Crime and Strike Force attorneys at the United States Attorney’s office. Ms. Szczepanik teaches a special topics course relating to Tax Crime and Forensics.
