College of Business Administration

Dear Student:

I am currently serving as the Chair of the Student Committee of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy Advisory Board and understand you may have an interest in accounting.

I would encourage you to seriously consider the School of Accountancy’s accounting program for your college studies. The Accounting program at The University of Akron is widely recognized by the business community as a strong program with a reputation for graduating quality, well-prepared students. The professors are very dedicated and committed to teaching. Many firms, companies and organizations recruit on campus for accounting students for both paid internship programs and full-time positions.

The School of Accountancy has several active student groups (e.g., Accounting Association and Beta Alpha Psi) that provide many opportunities for students to learn about the accounting profession, and the types of jobs that are available to accounting graduates. These organizations also give students the opportunity to interact with accounting professionals and individuals from the business community.

I am a principal with the regional accounting firm of Moore Stephens Apple. We are headquartered in Akron and employ approximately 90 individuals. We heavily recruit at the University of Akron for both internship and full-time positions. The University of Akron interns and graduates have been well prepared and have hit the ground running! Several of the interns from the University of Akron have been offered full-time positions at our firm upon completion of their internships.

With a degree in accounting and working in a public accounting firm, many exciting opportunities and adventures are right around the corner. There is no such thing as a typical work week. My schedule can vary from consulting with a client on selling their business at the proper value with the best after tax cash flow option, to a start up company selecting the best choice of entity from both a business and tax perspective. I meet with clients to develop tax savings strategies and accounting reporting compliance. I also work closely with bankers and attorneys who are advisors to my clients as well. We meet with our clients to develop estate planning and tax savings strategies for the individual owners of the business as well as succession planning for the business. As you can see, a career in accounting is much more than the posting of transactions in journals, it is a very rewarding and diverse career choice.

You are in an exciting time of your life, and selecting an area of study for your future career is a very important decision. Accounting as a career is full of many types of opportunities and I recommend it highly.

Sincerely,
Joel Hamsher, CPA, M.Tax.
