Grade Point Average (GPA) Calculation

As an undergraduate student in the College of Business Administration (CBA), you are required to maintain three different grade point averages to remain in good academic standing and ultimately, to graduate with a baccalaureate degree from this college.

Those requirements are:
2.00 GPA in all course work
2.00 GPA in all business and economics course work
2.00 GPA in your major course work

To calculate your GPA you need to determine the quality points associated with your grade for each course attempted. Use the following chart to determine your quality points. For example, the quality points for a 4-credit course with a grade of "C" equals 8. Total the number of quality points. Total the number of attempted credits (excluding withdrawals). Divide your total quality points by the total number of attempted credits. The final figure is your grade point average.

Grade 4 credits 3 credits 2 credits 1 credit
A 16 12 8 4
A- 14.8 11.1 7.4 3.7
B+ 13.2 9.9 6.6 3.3
B 12 9 6 3
B- 10.8 8.1 5.4 2.7
c+ 9.2 6.9 4.6 2.3
C 8 6 4 2
C- 6.8 5.1 3.4 1.7
D+ 5.2 3.9 2.6 1.3
D 4 3 2 1
D- 2.8 2.1 1.4 0.7
F 0 0 0 0

Different GPA Calculations

Overall GPA:
All UA course work is included in this GPA. Transfer course work from another university is not included.

Business and Economics GPA:
All courses whose department code falls between 6000 and 6999 (business courses) and courses whose department number is 3250 (economics). Included in this GPA are courses taken elsewhere at UA and are accepted as fulfilling a business requirement. (C&T courses accepted as fulfilling business requirements in accordance with the formal articulation agreement)

Major GPA:
All courses needed to complete major requirements, including all department numbers, not just business. This includes all UA courses accepted as fulfilling one of the major requirements.

Common GPA Questions

What if I repeat a course? What grade is used in my GPA?

If you repeat a course, only the grade for the last attempt will be used.

When can I take a course credit/non credit (CR/NC) and how does that affect my GPA?

For the baccalaureate degree, no more than 16 credits may be taken CR/NC. You are eligible for the CR/NC option if you have completed 50% of the number of credits required for a degree, and your overall GPA is 2.30+. The CR/NC option must be designated only at the time of registration for the course. The status cannot change once late registration (five days of the regular term, two days of summer sessions) has ended.

Courses that cannot be taken CR/NC include general education courses and any CBA requirements.

Courses than can be taken CR/NC include one free elective (not in major field) course per term and first and/or second-year language course at any time, regardless of grade-point average. Courses taken CR/NC are not included in the GPA calculation.

What if I receive an "F" in a course?

You must include the credits associated with this course in the number of credits attempted, but there will be no points added in to quality points total.

If you repeat the course and receive a higher grade, then you will add the quality points associated with this higher grade into your GPA.

What if I fall below one of the required 2.00 GPAs?

At the end of each semester, the CBA Undergraduate Advising Office receives a listing of those students who fall below 2.00 in one or more of their GPAs. These students’ records are evaluated and recommendations for improvement are mailed to each student.

If a problem continues or the GPA deficit becomes greater, the Undergraduate Programs Director may recommend specific course work to be repeated in order to improve academic status. Persistent GPA problems may result in suspension from the College of Business or dismissal from the University.
