MANAGEMENT: PRINCIPLES AND CONCEPTS Bulletin Description:
An interdisciplinary approach to the study of the basic principles of general management theory and practice.
Course Objectives:
1. Explain the role and purpose of management, the functions of management and the skills required for effective and efficient management relative to hierarchical level.
2. Understand how historical forces in society have influenced the evolution of the practice and study of management.
3. Describe major management theory perspectives, differentiate between the perspectives and understand their contributions to the practice of management.
4. Identify and describe content and process theories of motivation and the managerial implications of these theories.
5. Explain the fundamental principles of organizing and organization design and understand the external forces driving change in this area of management.
6. Identify and explain major leadership models, the implications of each for the role and behavior of practicing managers and the skills required for managers to be effective leaders.
7. Identify and explain the nature of effective interpersonal and organizational communication and understand the skills required for managers to communicate effectively in diverse environments.
8. Understand the role of managers as decision makers within various environments, the concept of bounded rationality and the skills required for innovative and effective problem-solving.
9. Explain the impact of effective human resource management on the competitive advantage of an organization and understand the legal environment of human resource management.
10. Understand major concepts of group dynamics and the characteristics of highly effective work teams.
11. Describe the nature of individual differences among organizational members and
identify effective means of managing the resulting diversity.
12. Identify the main forces driving change within the environment within which managers operate from the perspectives of multiple stakeholders
