Department of Management Information Systems Career Opportunities According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Computer systems analysts held almost 500,000 jobs, with salaries ranging from $40,000 to more than $100,000 per year. Higher level managers held another 300,000 jobs, with salaries ranging even higher. The National Association of Colleges & Employers (NACE) Salary Survey found that the average salary for graduates entering as Information Systems professionals in 2005 was about $43,000.
Despite the publicity about outsourcing of jobs to India and other countries, the demand for I/S professionals with strong business skills are expected to grow much faster than average for all occupations. The retirement of the “baby boomer” generation will leave many organizations without the requisite number of professionals in this area. And although some may be replaced by outsourcing, firms are realizing that they also need to cultivate young professionals who can rise up through the ranks, learning the business. It is hard to outsource the acquisition and mastery of this type of knowledge, especially as technology itself is changing so quickly.
