What do Information Systems professionals do?

Information systems (I/S) professionals are responsible for understanding and translating the information and computing needs of businesses, organizations, governments, and even individuals into forms that computer programmers and related professionals can understand. At the same time, I/S professionals explain the potential of existing and new technologies to these people.

I/S professionals can be programmers or network engineers, but more often they staff help desks, provide training, analyze business problems, and work with or lead project teams to develop or adapt software systems. I/S professionals who specialize in electronic business develop requirements for websites, and work with graphic designers and programmers to bring websites to fruition. I/S professionals who work in corporate data centers are responsible for the computer systems that run the business, from taking customer orders, triggering manufacturing, ordering raw materials and tracking inventories, to keeping the books, paying the bills, and reporting results to various stakeholders. I/S professionals get to know the business from bottom to top and from inside out. Later in an I/S career comes possibilities of leading the I/S function for a division of the firm or for the firm as a whole as the Chief Information Officers (CIO). CIOs are now responsible for helping to formulate business strategy, and I/S professionals need to have a strong foundation in all aspects of business.

I/S professionals face the constant challenge and exhilaration of figuring out how to use new technologies in the best interests of their organizations and society as a whole.
