Department of Finance Scholarships

The A. Frederic Banda Scholarship
Former students of A. Frederic Banda, in sincere appreciation for the support and guidance that he gave them while at The University of Akron, established the A. Frederic Banda Scholarship Fund in 2003. In addition to traditional instruction in the area of finance, Dr. Banda extended his lessons beyond the classroom to encourage student participation in college activities, student associations and professional internships. The A. Frederic Banda Scholarship recipient will be at the sophomore, junior, or senior level, enrolled in the College of Business Administration and pursuing a degree in finance. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 grade point average. To apply for the scholarship, submit the CBA Scholarship Application Form to the Chair of the CBA Scholarship Committee, College of Business Administration, The University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325-4805 by April 1.

The Banda Prize
The recipient of the Banda Prize is selected by the Finance Department. There is no application process. A cash award is given annually to a finance major who has completed the requirements for his or her degree at the University, with the highest cumulative grade point average. The Banda Prize was established by Dr. Arpad Frederic Banda, C.F.A., professor of finance, to encourage and recognize academic excellence. This prize is awarded in the Spring semester.

The Kenneth L. Calhoun Scholarship for Excellence in Finance
Note - Not Available for 2009 - 2010
The Kenneth L. Calhoun Scholarship for Excellence in Finance was created in 1998 by a grant from the Kenneth L. Calhoun Charitable Trust. This tuition scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman in the College of Business Administration with preference given to students who intend to major in finance. Selection of recipients is determined by the CBA Scholarship Committee and is based on academic merit. If you would like to be considered for this scholarship, please complete the application form below and submit it to Mrs. Andrienne Calderon, Chair, CBA Scholarship Committee, College of Business Administration, The University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325-4805 by February 28. The scholarship is renewable based on academic qualifications.

Briner-Catanzarite-Rakas Scholarship
Professors Briner, Catanzarite and Rakas established this $1,200 scholarship to encourage outstanding students in accounting or finance from The University of Akron to enroll in The University of Akron School of Law. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student entering the full-time program of law. This scholarship is based on merit and is awarded to an outstanding graduate from the School of Accountancy or Department of Finance. Selection is made by the Dean of the School of Law based on recommendations submitted by the Dean of the College of Business Administration.

Finance Advisory Board Scholarship Program
The purposes of the Finance Advisory Board Scholarship Program are to: (1) promote and encourage high potential students who show great promise for successful finance careers in business and government, (2) support the student recruitment efforts of the Department of Finance, and (3) maintain and improve the quality and reputation of Department of Finance programs by attracting excellent students. Selection criteria include a minimum GPA of 3.20, declared finance major, demonstrated leadership skills, extracurricular activities, and work experience. Recipients of this scholarship are selected during the fall semester. The application dead-line will be announced early in the fall semester. Contact Mr. D.A. The Thomas and Anita Gedelian Endowed Scholarship
Thomas and Anita Gedelian established this scholarship in 2006 to assist students pursuing degrees in Accounting and Finance. As alumni and benefactors of the CBA, Mr. and Mrs. Gedelian are active supporters of their alma mater. Establishing a scholarship to assist students in their academic pursuits is an example of the Gedelians’ belief in the importance of higher education. In selecting recipients of the Gedelians’ Endowed Scholarship, preference will be given to a junior or senior majoring in Accounting or Finance. Applicants must maintain a 3.3 grade point average and demonstrate employment that assists in contributing to college expenses, as well as participation in civic or community activities or organizations. Selection will be made by the dean of the College of Business Administration with input from the department chairs of the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy and the Department of Finance. The Louis F. and Dorothy C. Hampel Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1995, this endowed scholarship fund was established by Dr. Robert L. Hampel in memory of his parents’ dedication to the College. The Hampel Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in Finance, enrolled full-time in the CBA, and enrolled in The University of Akron Honors Program. The scholarship is renewable as long as the recipient remains in good standing with the Honors Program. This scholarship is awarded in the Fall semester by the Honors Preceptor in the Department of Finance. The Galen J. Roush Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1979 by the GAR Foundation as a lasting tribute to the late Galen J. Roush, Akron business and community leader whose organizational genius led to the founding of Roadway Express Inc. The Roush Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate finance and accounting majors enrolled in the College of Business Administration. Selection of recipients is determined by the CBA Scholarship Committee, on the basis of specified academic criteria, at the end of each Spring semester. There is no restriction as to race, color, creed, sex, or national origin. Application forms are mailed to all eligible candidates during the summer. Valmark Securities, Inc. Financial Planning Scholarship
Valmark Securities, Inc. created this scholarship for students majoring in Finance or Accounting in the College of Business Administration at The University of Akron. The purpose of the scholarship is to provide tuition and fees assistance for a deserving student who has a career goal of personal financial planning and intends to qualify for the CFP® mark. Each year, one $3,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student chosen by Finance Department faculty and Valmark representatives. The scholarship is awarded for one year only, and can be awarded only once to an individual student. The Valmark scholar must satisfy the following criteria:
• Be a Finance or Accounting major with a declared intent to meet the educational requirements to sit for the Certified Financial Planner® Certification Examination.
• Have completed eighty (80) credit hours as of the fall semester before application (second semester sophomore).
• Have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0.
• Complete and submit the scholarship application along with an official copy of his/her transcript.
• Complete an interview with Valmark Securities, Inc. and Finance Department faculty.

The Wall Street Journal Award
The Department of Finance, with the support and sponsorship of Dow Jones, Inc., has awarded The Wall Street Journal Award since 1962. The Wall Street Journal Award is presented to the outstanding senior finance student each year. Over the years, the departmental faculty has directed the award to students who have had outstanding scholarship in finance courses, leadership in student organizations, such as the Financial Management Association, and who are likely to find success in a finance profession. The award includes a traditional paperweight, a one-year subscription to The Wall Street Journal and nameplate recognition on a wall-plaque in the Department of Finance. The presentation is made at the department's annual Spring Recognition Luncheon.
