Admission to a graduate program is never automatic and the question always arises “What is the minimum that I need on … “ or “Should I apply if ….”. these questions are reasonable and deserve answers but the answers are not easy. So let’s start with the essentials. You need to have a completed application to be considered for admission. That means that you have to have a GMAT score, a TOEFL score if you are an international student, hold an undergraduate degree, have your statement of purpose, letters of recommendation, resume, transcripts and all the other material in to us so that our graduate admissions committee can evaluate your application. You may think ‘well ok, but you have not told me anything’ but we have. We look at the whole application. There is more to a person than a GMAT score, or a letter of reference. The committee looks at everything. Questions such as ‘where did the person do their undergraduate work’ and ‘was this in on time’ are commonly asked. Spelling errors are noted. Everything you turn in and the way you turn it in says something about you. We look to admit people who are going to succeed when they graduate. We look for people who are going to contribute to their classes not just attend a lecture and do nothing else. We look for people who can convey this in their application materials.
Are there hard floors? Yes. If you have an undergraduate GPA that is less than a 2.25 then it is going to take some serious work to convince the committee that you will perform well in graduate school. If the 2.25 happened 20 years ago and you have been successful since then the committee also realizes that you cannot change the past and can be convinced through your resume and statement of purpose. If your GMAT is low should you apply? Again it depends on what else you have to offer that can be used as evidence that the GMAT is not a fair representation of your abilities. Sometimes the committee will encourage an applicant to retake the test to improve his or her score. We would expect a GMAT of at least 500 however. Is work experience necessary? No, it is not. At the same time, we would expect you to be a very solid student.
Our profile of our student body says a lot about our students. The average GMAT is around 570. the average undergraduate GPA is about 3.2. The average number of years of work experience is about 5. The average age of our students is about 30. Do we have 22 year olds with no work experience in the program? Yes. Do we have 22 year olds in the program with no work experience, a 2.2 GPA and a GMAT of 400? No. Should you apply? Yes. Make your best case. Present yourself well. Make us know how much and why you want to pursue a graduate degree here and we will find room for you.
International students often wonder if the degree they hold will be acceptable. Many international students may hold a 15 year degree instead of a 16 year degree. Yes, 15 year degrees are sufficient but you will have to expect to take more or all of the foundation or bridge-up courses.
