Master of Science in Management
Introduction |
|

|
The Master of Science in Management program is a specialized degree program. That means that it is fundamentally different from an MBA program. While the MBA has the objective of providing the student to study business over a broad range of subjects the MSM is much more narrowly focused. At Akron, we permit the student to pursue in-depth study in one of two areas in the MSM: Information Systems Management and Human Resource Management. The reasons why we focus on these two areas are simple. We have long tradition of dedicated faculty resources dedicated to these interest areas and our faculty believe that the extensive offerings in our MSM program make our graduates much more marketable than if we offered a reduced version of the concentration at the MBA level. The MSM is not for everyone. It is for those who know what they want to do or want to apply what they already know more effectively.
At the same time, the degree has Management as its roots. To be a successful business manager, you still need to be familiar with the basic business concepts and nomenclature used in daily activities. To provide you with that background, then MSM has the same foundation or “Bridge-Up” courses that the MBA has. Since these courses are the same as the MBA foundation, the waiver exams that we offer are available to MSM students as well. Beyond the foundation, the two programs are very different. Most notable is the 12 credit concentration (MBA) vs. the 21 credit concentration (MSM).
Only you can decide which graduate program is the right one for you. We are confident however that our faculty and our courses will prove to be a winning combination for your future success.
That is clearly an advantage of choosing Graduate Business study at Akron.
