Waiver Exams

Search Graduate Programs
Waiver exams are available for some of the Foundation Courses in the Master of Taxation program. Specifically, the courses for which waiver exams are available are:
6200:601 Financial Accounting
6200:530 Taxation I
6400:531 Taxation II
In order to take a waiver exam there are a number of conditions that need to be met. Typically, a student who is a practicing CPA can expect to have all of the foundation courses in the Master of Taxation program waived.

First, the student must be admitted to the program. We do not permit students who intend to apply to take waiver exams.

Second, waiver exams are not available to students who are in non-degree programs of study or in graduate certificate programs.

Third, you must register to take the exam at least two weeks prior to when they are administered and have paid the waiver exam fee at least one week prior to taking an exam.

Since a passing grade on a waiver exam is deemed to be sufficient proof that a student has the knowledge needed in a particular field of study, they are held as being the equivalent to a course for prerequisite checking. That is, if a student needs 6200:601 as a prerequisite for a subsequent class and has successfully passed the waiver exam, then the student can register for that class. If the student has not taken the class or passed the waiver exam, then the student will to be permitted to register for the subsequent class.

This makes it imperative that students take waiver exams early on in their program of study or they will not be able to maintain a full schedule of classes.

Multiple exams can be taken at one session however the exams themselves are very similar to comprehensive final exams in the subject area and tend to be a couple of hours long. Exams may be repeated, however if a student takes an exam and has a grade of less than 40% on it, the student may be required to take the equivalent class.

Waiver exams are offered at various times throughout the year.
