| UA College of Business Offers MTAX Program in Cuyahoga County |

Accountants in Cuyahoga County will now have the same opportunity to attend a locally held MTax program as their counterparts in Summit County. The University of Akron’s George W. Daverio School of Accountancy has announced that the university’s MTax program — the only one of its kind in northern Ohio — also will be offered by UA through the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center in Brecksville beginning Fall Semester 2007.
Students in the 21-month program will attend classes one Monday evening per week through most of the program, and complete much of the program online. The students will start and complete the program together.
The program — which provides the substantive technical and professional knowledge, skills and abilities needed to function as a taxation specialist — clearly fills a need in the Cleveland area, according to Dr. Thomas Calderon, UA’s accounting department chair.
“Many accountants in Cuyahoga County have either traveled to our Akron main campus to attend the MTax program, or have expressed a desire to have one more locally based,” Calderon says. “We felt this demand was a resounding call to expand the program in the Cleveland area.”
Although it is intended primarily for practicing accountants and attorneys who want to further their careers in taxation, other professionals with an interest in a specialized taxation degree also are encouraged to attend the program, Calderon says. A joint MTax/law program is now a highly sought-after program alternative as well, he adds.
“This intense yet highly manageable program is a natural next step in an accountant’s career,” Calderon says.
The program begins on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Completion of the GMAT is not required for practicing CPAs and attorneys with at least two years of experience.
