College Highlights

  • CBA degree programs are accredited by AACSB International – The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. This is the highest level of business school accreditation possible.

  • The CBA has been included in the 2007 edition of the Princeton Review's Best 282 Business Schools.

  • At the undergraduate level, the CBA offers six baccalaureate degrees. Students may choose from among fourteen majors and fourteen minors. At the graduate level, there are four degree programs - the Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Science in Management (MSM), Master of Science in Accountancy (MSA) and Master of Taxation (MTax). There are ten MBA concentrations, two MSM options and two MSA options.

  • CBA undergraduate classes average 35-40 students in core courses and fewer than 30 students in most classes in the major fields. Graduate classes are even smaller, with an average in the required classes of 30 students and an average of 17 students in elective classes.

  • Teaching and learning are our top priorities. Classes are taught by full-time faculty and highly experienced business professionals, not graduate students.

  • CBA faculty are enthusiastic and innovative and provide students with the feedback needed to develop sound business judgment. They are accessible, both before and after class, and by appointment.

  • The College’s curriculum emphasizes the competencies companies want -- communication, ethics, interpersonal, leadership, problem solving, and teamwork skills. The curriculum is experientially based and allows students to work in teams on real-world business cases. Group field projects allow teams of students, acting as consultants, to apply their classroom knowledge to help solve problems facing local businesses.

  • All graduate degrees can be earned by attending evening classes. Graduate students may begin their program of study in any semester, including summer.

  • For the last five years, the CBA’s graduate program has had more Fulbright scholars than any other graduate program at The University of Akron.

  • The CBA’s Institute for Global Business gives students an opportunity to participate in study abroad programs and in internships with companies doing business internationally.

  • Fully staffed academic advising offices are available for both undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Over 200 cooperative education and internship opportunities are available for students. The University’s Center for Career Management posts hundreds of full-time positions, which are available for graduating seniors and alumni.

  • The Journal of Personal Selling and Sales Management lists the CBA as one of the nation's top universities for academic research in sales. Sales and Management Magazine lists the CBA’s Fisher Institute for Professional Selling among six schools where companies should recruit for new sales people.

  • In its May 2004 issue, Entrepreneur magazine ranked the college's entrepreneurship program as one of 13 "first tier" programs at regional universities.

  • The Gary L. and Karen S. Taylor Institute for Direct Marketing gives our students the opportunity to learn skills that are much sought-after in the real world. Just as the Fisher Institute for Professional Selling has enhanced the reputation of the sales profession, the goal of the Taylor Institute is to do the same for the field of direct marketing.

  • The CBA maintains close connections to the business community. The college has a total of nine advisory boards with a combined membership of 200 business executives. Business executives also maintain a dialogue with business students through "professor for a day,” guest lecturing, student organizations, mentoring and coaching, the Graduate Colloquium, and other activities.

  • The annual Goodyear Executive Leadership Forum, sponsored by the Institute for Global Business, brings internationally distinguished business leaders to campus to meet with students and faculty. Distinguished speakers at the Forum have included Stan Gault, Chairman of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company; Hiroshi Okuda, President of Toyota; Tim Timken, Chairman of The Timken Company; Chris Jones, CEO of J. Walter Thompson; Joseph Magliochetti, CEO of the Dana Corporation; Andrea Jung, CEO of Avon Products, Inc.; J.D. Power III, Chairman of J.D. Power and Associates; David Oreck, Founder of Oreck Corporation; Richard K. Smucker, President and Co-CEO of The J.M. Smucker Company; and Robert J. Keegan, Chairman, CEO, and President of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company.

  • The Department of Marketing sponsors the annual Donald L. Kaufman Business Speaker Series. Funded by Donald Kaufman, retired President and CEO of Alside, Inc., the series provides an opportunity for UA faculty and students to hear distinguished business leaders speak on topics of current interest. Past speakers are Charles Ratner, President and CEO, Forest City; Elizabeth A. Lange, Vice President, Worldwide Customer Services, Tiffany & Co.; and Jack Kahl, former CEO of Manco, Inc.

  • The annual Business Plan Competition sponsored by the Fitzgerald Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, provides students with an opportunity to gain experience in developing and presenting a business plan, obtain funding for their business venture and meet some of the most prominent investors and entrepreneurs in N.E. Ohio.

  • The CBA awards more than $500,000 worth of scholarships to its undergraduate students each year. About $1,036,000 is awarded to graduate students each year in the form of research assistantships and tuition scholarships. Graduate research assistantships include full tuition waiver.

  • The college’s seventeen active student organizations offer opportunities for development of social, professional, leadership, and networking skills through interaction with business professionals and other students. Our organizations have won many national and international awards.

  • The CBA is housed in a modern, well-equipped building with amphitheater-style classrooms, state-of-the-art media systems, technologically advanced computer labs and a nationally acclaimed sales laboratory. All 19 classrooms in the building are technologically enhanced.
