Scholarships for Freshmen

The Joyce Wortman Barnett Endowed International Business Scholarship for Excellence
This scholarship is awarded each year to a female student who is enrolled in the College of Business Administration with a major in International Business. This scholarship was endowed by James W. Barnett in memory of his wife, Joyce Wortman-Barnett. Jim Barnett ’54 became the first director of the Institute for Global Business after retiring from The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. Scholarships will be awarded by the CBA Scholarship Committee, in consultation with the Institute for Global Business. Selection will be based on academic merit. The Margaret (Zink) Brewster Scholarship in International Business (formerly The Mrs. Evan B. (Peg Zink ‘25) Brewster Expanding Scholarship Fund)
This scholarship was established in 2001 by Mrs. Margaret (Zink) Brewster ‘25 and the Brewster Family and is awarded to academically talented students at The University of Akron who are pursing degrees in International Business. Scholarships will be awarded by the CBA Scholarship Committee, in consultation with the Institute for Global Business. Selection will be based on academic merit. The Kenneth L. Calhoun Scholarship for Excellence in Finance
Note - Not Available for 2009 - 2010
The Kenneth L. Calhoun Scholarship for Excellence in Finance was created in 1998 by a grant from the Kenneth L. Calhoun Charitable Trust. This tuition scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman in the College of Business Administration with preference given to students who intend to major in finance. Selection of recipients is determined by the CBA Scholarship Committee and is based on academic merit. Center for Information Technology and E-Business (CITE) Tuition Scholarship
The CITE Scholarship was established to recruit outstanding students to the college’s information systems and e-business programs and to recognize current information systems and e-business majors who demonstrate academic excellence. It is awarded to students at any level (freshman, sophomore, junior, senior or graduate) and is renewable. To be eligible for the scholarship, an incoming freshman must have a high school GPA of at least 3.0 and an ACT score of at least 22 or SAT score of at least 1010, and be an information systems or e-business major. Selection of recipients is determined by the CBA Scholarship Committee, in consultation with the CITE Advisory Board, and is based on academic merit. To remain eligible for this scholarship, the recipient must continue to major in information systems or e-business in the CBA, maintain a grade point average of at least 3.4, and remain a full-time student.

George W. Daverio Freshman Scholarship
Established in 1994, this scholarship is awarded to an entering freshman majoring in accounting who graduated from an area high school. This scholarship is funded by the Daverio endowment. It can be renewed each year if the student maintains a 3.40 minimum grade point average and continues as an accounting major. Selection of recipients is determined by the School of Accountancy Scholarship Committee on the basis of academic merit. Applications are accepted until mid-February of each year. Karen Frey Scholarship
This $3,000 scholarship is awarded to an entering freshman majoring in business who graduated from an area parochial high school. Selection is made by the CBA Scholarship Committee every four years. Application forms are mailed to area parochial schools.

Joseph C. Hete & Family Endowed Scholarship
Joseph C. Hete established this scholarship to provide opportunity and encouragement for students seeking to achieve life goals through higher education. Like his six siblings, Mr. Hete is a graduate of The University of Akron. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Accounting in 1976. Today, Mr Hete is President and CEO of ABX Air, Inc., a cargo airline with a fleet of more than 100 aircraft. Applicants for the Joseph C. Hete & Family Endowed Scholarship are expected to be employed on a part or full-time basis and have demonstrated financial need. Applicants must submit an essay that visions their future careers. Selection of recipients is determined by the CBA Scholarship Committee. The Donald S. Hills Endowed Scholarship Fund in the George W. Daverio School of Accountancy
This scholarship was established in 1996 by Donald S. Hills, a 1947 graduate of the College of Business Administration with a degree in accounting. The scholarship will be used to recruit incoming freshmen desiring to major in accounting. Mr. Hills served as Vice President of Sara Lee Products and assistant Secretary of Sara Lee Corporation and Vice President of Lawsons Company. Selection of recipients is determined by the School of Accountancy Scholarship Committee on the basis of academic merit. Applications are accepted until mid-February of each year. The Russell R. and Vivienne S. Johnstone Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2005 by Vivienne Skadsdamen Johnstone in memory of her husband, Russell, and as a gift to the Akron community where she and her husband lived and raised their children. It is to be awarded to incoming or current CBA students who have financial need. Consideration will be given to incoming freshmen who have been directly admitted to the CBA. Selection of recipients is determined by the CBA Scholarship Committee. The Daniel Joseph Maimone Scholarship Fund
Established in 1978 by family and friends in loving tribute to the memory of Daniel Joseph Maimone, whose courage and determination in contending with leukemia was an inspiration to all who knew him, this endowed fund provides three or four scholarship awards of $1,500 each for either accounting students or incoming freshmen majoring in accounting. Selection of recipients is based on merit, character, leadership attributes, academic interest, and need. There is no restriction in regard to sex, creed, color, or national origin. The Peggy and Bill Maltarich, Jr.
Endowed Business Scholarship in Excellence

This scholarship was established in 1998 by Peggy and Bill Maltarich to thank The University of Akron for the fine education they received. The scholarship will be awarded to an entering freshman who has declared a business major and will be based on merit. Selection is made by the CBA Scholarship Committee. The Robert and Janet McMinn Scholarship
Note - Not Available for 2008 - 2009
Robert McMinn (’72) and his wife Janet established this scholarship in 2004 to assist students pursuing degrees in Business Administration at The University of Akron. An active alumni volunteer and benefactor of the CBA, Mr. McMinn is currently serving as chairman of the CBA Advancement Council and has been a member of the council since 1991. In selecting recipients of this scholarship, first preference will be given to students from the following high schools: Nordonia High School, Macedonia; Lorain County Joint Vocational School, Oberlin; and North Ridgeville High School, North Ridgeville. Should no students from these schools apply, selection will be made by the CBA Scholarship Committee, with input from Mr. and Mrs. McMinn during their lifetimes. The R. C. and Katharine Musson Endowment Fund in the College of Business Administration
This fund was established on an endowed basis in 1985 through a grant by the R. C. and Katharine Musson Charitable Foundation. Earnings are used to provide scholarships for new freshman who have received direct admission to the College of Business Administration. Selection of recipients is determined by the CBA Scholarship Committee and is based on academic merit. The Richard C. Rea, CPA, Scholarship Fund
The Richard C. Rea, CPA, Scholarship Fund was established by Rea & Associates Inc. to honor the founding partner on the firm’s 50th anniversary. The scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen intending to major in accounting. Recipients must be residents of a county in which Rea and Associates Inc. has an office. Selection of recipients is determined by the School of Accountancy Scholarship Committee. The Committee will review the list of entering freshmen who have obtained admission to the CBA by February 15, and will select a recipient based on academic merit.

The Galen J. Roush Memorial Scholarship Fund
This endowed fund was established in 1979 by the GAR Foundation as a lasting tribute to the late Galen J. Roush, Akron business and community leader whose organizational genius led to the founding of Roadway Express, Inc. The Roush Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance for deserving undergraduate finance or accounting majors. Selection of recipients is determined by the CBA Scholarship Committee and is based on academic merit. To be eligible for consideration, students must qualify for direct admission to the CBA. The Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Endowed Scholarship
The Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Endowed Scholarship was established in 2000 by the College of Business Administration Alumni Advisory Board to recognize and honor the significant impact Dr. Frank L. Simonetti has had on the lives of thousands of CBA graduates. The Dr. Frank L. Simonetti Endowed Scholarship is awarded annually to incoming students who have been admitted to the College of Business Administration and display significant potential as future business leaders through academic success, civic involvement and community efforts. The scholarship recipients are selected by the College of Business Administration and the CBA Alumni Advisory Board from the list of entering freshmen who have declared a management major. Awards are renewable to recipients maintaining a 3.0 GPA. For more information, contact the Alumni Association office at 330-972-7270.

The Harry P. and Rainy G. Stitzlein Endowed Scholarship for Excellence in Business
This scholarship was established in 1995 by Mr. Stitzlein’s wife, Rainy Stitzlein, Malone Advertising, family, friends, and alumni as a memorial to one of the University’s most beloved alumni who died March 14, 1995, at the age of 67. The scholarship pays homage to a man who was a great community leader, loyal alumnus and distinguished businessman. Mr. Stitzlein, Chairman of Malone Advertising, Inc. of Akron, was a successful businessman and dynamic community leader whose unabashed devotion to his University and hometown never wavered. Like his wife, Rainy, Mr. Stitzlein worked for decades to advance the University’s mission.

The scholarship is awarded to one or two students as determined by the committee. If one student receives the scholarship, it is $10,000 per year for four years. If two students are selected, it is $5,000 per year for four years. The funds may be applied toward the student’s tuition, books, fees, or room and board. The student applicant should be ranked in the upper one-third of their high school graduating class, have a 3.25 or better GPA, and a 26 or higher ACT score. It is renewable based on good academic standing, interest in business and maintaining a GPA of 3.25. Malone Advertising may also provide an internship to the scholarship recipient based on interest and performance. Preference is given to those students indicating marketing or advertising as their major or minor with demonstrated ability and interest. Criteria for selection include class rank, GPA, ACT scores, extracurricular activities, and community involvement.

To apply for this scholarship, submit an application (consisting of a high school transcript, resume, cover letter and 2 or 3 Letters of Reference) to the Scholarship Chairman, Department of Marketing, College of Business Administration, The University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325-4804. The Sidney R. and Cora Walker Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was established in 1995 by Sidney R. and Cora Walker as a means of supporting and advancing the career aspirations of business students in the fields of marketing and entrepreneurship. Through his love of higher education, Mr. Walker’s wish was to foster educational opportunities for worthy and deserving undergraduate students who major in marketing management, sales management, emarketing/ advertising and international business or minor in entrepreneurial studies. The scholarship is open to freshmen, sophomores, and juniors who are pursuing one or more of the above mentioned majors or the minor. Walker Scholarships are renewable for those recipients who meet or exceed established performance standards. The Robert D. and Peggy A. Weed Scholarship for Excellence in Business
Established in 1998 by the late Robert D. Weed, the Robert D. and Peggy A. Weed Scholarship for Excellence in Business promotes the ideals of dedication, integrity, innovation, and growth. As owner and founder of Robert Weed Plywood, a wholesale warehouse distribution center for RV manufacturers, Mr. Weed attributed his success to people. To Weed, the most important asset for any business was skilled professionals committed to superior service and doing the job right. Through this scholarship, The University of Akron attracts the most talented and dedicated students pursuing careers in business. The scholarship is awarded to incoming freshmen with high academic standing. Selection of recipients is determined by the CBA Scholarship Committee and is based on academic merit. The Bernard F. Zaucha Endowed Accounting Scholarship for Excellence
This scholarship was established in 1997 by Mr. Bernard F. Zaucha, former faculty member of The University of Akron’s School of Accountancy. The scholarship was created to thank The University of Akron for the fine education he received and for appreciation for his many years of teaching. The scholarship is to be awarded annually to a student enrolled in the College of Business Administration who is a graduate of Archbishop Hoban High School, with first preference given to accounting majors. Selection of the recipient is made by the CBA Scholarship Committee, in consultation with the Zaucha family. Application forms are sent to the Guidance Department at Archbishop Hoban High School each year.
