Student Organizations - Accounting

The School of Accountancy provides students with many opportunities to engage in accounting-related extracurricular activities by providing administrative support to our student organizations. These organizations give students opportunities to network and socialize with peers and professionals, assume leadership roles, learn more about the profession, and further enhance their communication skills.

The School has a nationally-recognized chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, The National Accounting Fraternity. The Chapter has earned Superior Chapter for the past two years, and past members of the chapter have won both national and regional manuscript contests awards. The chapter has a long and distinguished history of national recognition for its service activities and innovative programs.

Another organization for accounting students is the Accounting Association. Membership is open to all accounting majors. The Accounting Association sponsors field trips to local firms and athletic events between students and professionals, and invites public accounting firms and other companies to campus to talk to students about career opportunities.

The School also houses three student organizations which are affiliated with national professional organizations.

The Akron chapter of IMA is sponsored by the Institute for Management Accountants (IMA) and offers membership to all business majors with an emphasis on cost/management accounting. In addition to providing opportunities for professional and personal development, the chapter offers students opportunities to meet local professionals representing many areas of the accounting profession.

The National Association of Black Accountants enables minority students to meet, interact with, and learn from successful black accountants, and through its speech contests and friendly guidance.

Membership to The University of Akron’s ISACA Student Group is open to students majoring in Accounting, Accounting Information Systems, MIS and related information systems areas. ISACA (Information Systems Audit and Control Association) is the leading organization for information governance, control, security and audit professionals. Sponsored by the national ISACA office and the North Eastern Ohio ISACA Chapter, the Akron’s ISACA Student Group supports the education and promotion of ISACA standards and knowledge. Students benefit by participation in workshops and seminars, interaction with professionals, and learning about internship and employment opportunities.

For several years, the School has hosted a Student Toastmasters group. This group’s primary mission is to help develop and enhance students’ oral communication skills.
