Eligibility Requirements
In order to apply for NBPTS, there are certain eligibility requirements outlined by the NBPTS. In general, teachers must possess a bachelor’s degree, have taught a minimum of three years in a public or private school, and hold a valid teaching certificate/license (including for the three years of teaching experience). A candidate must also be the teacher of record for a classroom or subject area in which certification is being sought during the year of candidacy.
Application Fees and the Ohio Department of Education
The application fee for NBPTS during the 2005-2006 school year is $2,300. The Ohio Department of Education (ODE) makes funds available to assist with this to eligible candidates who attend an official orientation session and who apply within said timeframe (between May 1, 2005, and June 30, 2005). The University of Akron NB support site provides multiple opportunities for an official orientation session every year. For the 2005-2006 cycle, ODE will pay $2,000; the candidate pays $300. Visit the ODE NBPTS web site for more information.
Stipend Information
The Ohio Department of Education awards candidates who receive their National Board Certification© with financial remuneration. Beginning in 2003, and given the availability of funds, ODE will provide a stipend of $1,000 per year for ten years to those teachers who become National Board Certified Teachers. Visit the ODE NBPTS web site for more information.
