The UA NBPTS Support Cohort began providing support services to candidates during 1997-1998. With monies made available by the Ohio Department of Education, we continue to provide comprehensive support services to our candidates, although we do operate yearly based on grant applications.
With a total of 32,131 National Board Certified Teachers in the country to date, 2,172 of these teachers are from Ohio, ranking Ohio sixth in the nation with regard to total number of NBCTs.
Since our program’s inception, we have served 246 candidates*, with 168 of those individuals becoming National Board Certified Teachers. In other words, The University of Akron has mentored nearly 10% of Ohio’s total population of NBCTs! While the NBPTS estimates an average achievement rate of approximately 50%, our support cohort’s overall achievement rate is 67%.
*This number does not reflect the 2003-2004 class statistics which are anticipated in November 2004.
