About the College of Education
The College of Education was established in 1921 and is the second oldest professional school at The University of Akron. One of Ohio's three largest teacher educator preparation programs, the College is designated a "successful college of education" by the Ohio Department of Education.
As a community of professionals, we prepare Educators as Decision Makers through standard-setting programs that enhance teaching, learning, and human development; research and inquiry; and outreach. We are committed to these core components of professional practice and scholarship: Knowledge, Technology, Diversity, and Ethics.
The College of Education is comprised of the Department of Counseling, the Department of Curricular and Instructional Studies, the Department of Educational Foundations and Leadership, and the Department of Sports Science and Wellness Education. Programs housed within the College of Education Departments prepare undergraduate students for work in a variety of educational settings. Graduate programs prepare students for future employment in educational settings as teachers and administrators, mental health agencies, institutions of higher education and physical education/exercise physiology/sports science settings.
All programs are accredited by their respective organizations and learned societies. Based upon feedback from community partners, our students enter their respective fields very well prepared. The College also prides itself on a very strong and dedicated faculty. Our faculty members are recognized at the international and national levels for their contributions to research and higher education. In addition, our administrators are dedicated to the well-being of our student body, maintaining the integrity of our departments and programs and contributing to the overall improvement of higher education at the state and national levels.
In order to provide optimum educational experiences and enhance community/university partnerships, the College also operates seven centers and more than 40 collaborative arrangements with state and local organizations and agencies. Our faculty and students provide important leadership for campus and community initiatives and are active in state, national, and international settings to further the University and College missions.
We are very proud of our College and will be happy to assist you. If you have any questions about the departments, programs, or faculty in the College of Education that are not answered by the information in the following pages, please contact the Dean's Office, (330) 972-7680.
