Mission and Vision
As a result of a recent collaborative dialogue among the faculty and its professional community including candidates and professional practitioners, the mission of the College of Education has been revised and captured in the following statement:The University of Akron’s College of Education is a community of professionals whose purpose is to provide leadership for community well-being through standard-setting programs that enhance teaching, learning, and human development; research and inquiry; and outreach. We develop ourselves and others through continuous improvement and through a commitment to these core components of professional practice and scholarship: Knowledge, Technology, Diversity, and Ethics. The foundation of the conceptual framework rests solidly on the mission of The University of Akron (see Appendix A) and the mission of the College of Education, which encompasses the programs in the unit that provide leadership for community well-being in a metropolitan setting. Although the primary purpose of this document is to “establish the shared vision for the unit’s efforts in preparing educators to work in P-12 schools” (NCATE 2000), the intent is to include all programs in the College of Education whenever appropriate. The mission of the college places the focus on the development of education professionals who provide leadership for community well-being in a metropolitan setting. To fulfill our mission, we encourage research and inquiry that contribute to the knowledge base of teaching and learning, and we promote educational outreach to constituents in the community. The College of Education offers a comprehensive slate of standards-based programs for school and community professionals that we envision will define the standard for excellence. The conceptual framework recognizes that this mission cannot be achieved solely through the efforts of those in the College of Education but must also involve collaboration with members of the entire educational community, which includes faculty and staff throughout the University, local schools, and community personnel.
