Message from the Interim Dean

Dr. Cynthia Capers

Welcome to the College of Education web pages! These pages contain important information about our programs, centers and services. The College of Education is a place where students are exposed to cutting edge innovations through classroom, field and student teaching experiences. In addition, our graduate programs provide exemplary preparation for counseling, educational administration, physical education and classroom teaching/curriculum. Our pre-service and professional development programs receive high acclaim from students and colleagues. The recognition extended to the College from colleagues, community members, and alumni validates our engagement in the academic enterprise of preparing teachers and counselors as critical thinkers, decision makers and leaders.

Our academic programs are approved by the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) and the College has met the rigorous new performance requirements of the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) with continuous accreditation achieved since the inception of NCATE in 1954. Our curricular programs are also accredited nationally by specialty organizations. Our counseling programs have been awarded accreditation by the American Psychological Association (APA) and Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Faculty members, as noted experts in their fields, are sought after to participate in projects that carve the way for the preparation of professional educators and those pursuing careers in counseling, marital and family therapy, and sport science and wellness. Student services are provided by a knowledgeable and dedicated group of professionals and staff who give individual attention to students to facilitate their success and progression through their program of study. Through our commitment to the core components of knowledge, technology, ethics and diversity we have developed standard setting programs, engage in research and inquiry, and focus on outreach for professional development.

We, the faculty, staff, and administrators, hold pride in our academic quality, scholarly productivity, faculty excellence, and student outcomes. We are all about preparing Educators as Decision Makers. For additional information please visit the specific pages for our academic departments, programs and services. We remain available to assist you as you explore the opportunities at The University of Akron College of Education.
