Program Overview
Mission
The faculty in the Department of Counseling has as its mission the goal of training students who display a respect for human dignity, exhibit a commitment to fulfillment of their individual potential, show an understanding of educational and counseling processes with knowledge in their specific field of endeavor, apply ethical and competent behavior in the use of counseling skills, acquire and use knowledge of the roles and functions of others working in related fields, possess and display maturity in self-development, and who understand issues and trends of a multicultural and diverse society. Additionally, faculty and students both respect and conduct qualitative and quantitative inquiries into mental health-related issues.
Admission Standards
The following materials must be included in doctoral degree application packets:
- A completed University of Akron Graduate School application form
- Official undergraduate and master's degree transcripts
- Master's degree from an accredited university
- Official GRE Scores
- A Department of Counseling application supplement form
- Three letters of reference
- Personal Interview
Personal interviews will be scheduled with all applicants submitting completed application packets. Once all personal interviews have been completed, all of the following criteria will be considered during admissions decisions: graduate grade point average, Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, ratings on letters of reference, prevous professional and volunteer work related to the helping professions, and performance during admissions interviews. Admission decisions are made by the Counselor Education and Supervision program faculty after applicants are rank-ordered according to the criteria listed above. All of the above criteria are considered before applicants are rank-ordered.
Placement Objectives for Graduates
The Counselor Education and Supervision Doctoral Program is intended to prepare students to work as counselor educators, supervisors, researchers, and advanced practitioners in academic and clinical settings.
Graduates use their education and preparation as paths to careers in community mental health and human service agaencies, educational institutions, private practice, government, business, and industrial settings. Addressing the Needs of the State and the Region
Student enrollment has remained relatively steady over the past few years, reflecting the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, report projecting faster than average growth in counseling positions at both the master's and doctoral levels through 2012 (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2004-05 Edition). Growth in Ohio is expected to parallel the national picture as reflected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics report.
The Counselor Education and Supervision Doctoral Program has been conferred accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).
