Diversity at The University of Akron, College of Education, Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy Program*In accordance with Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE Standards 10.2), the Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy goals, the Department of Counseling goals, and The University of Akron goals, we strive for cultural awareness, sensitivity, and diversity. For our purposes the definition of diversity and culture is a broad and inclusive one. Culture is the intersection of memberships in groups that produces an internal/external identity and the accompanying values, beliefs, customs, and symbols. Examples of memberships in groups include (but are not limited to) race, ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, physical status, and geographical location. One’s cultural background may privilege some while marginalizing others. The Program’s objective is to teach an awareness of and an appreciation for diverse backgrounds, ideas, beliefs, and people. This is done through basic knowledge of particular groups and of power/privilege in general, creating an awareness of one’s own cultural background and how it impacts one’s worldview, teaching a variety of ideas and perspectives, and applying knowledge to working with a diverse client population.
