Marriage & Family Counseling/Therapy (Master's)

Program Overview

Mission

The training of marriage and family therapists is based on a relational view of life in which an understanding and respect for diversity and non-discrimination are fundamentally addressed, practice, and valued. Based on this view, marriage and family therapy is a professional orientation toward life and is applicable to a wide variety of circumstances, including individual, couple, family, group, and community problems. (COAMFTE Standards Version 11.)

Admission Criteria
  • Earned bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 2.75 grade point average (GPA) for all undergraduate coursework or a minimum 3.0 GPA for the last 64 credits of undergraduate coursework.
  • Three letters of reference with rating forms completed.
  • Personal interview.

Placement Objectives for Graduates
  • A primary objective is that each marriage and family graduate will contribute to the field of marriage and family therapy by practicing in an ethical and professional manner.
  • Successfully pass Ohio MFT licensure examination.
  • Continue to be involved in the accumulation of direct client care hours to complete 1000 hours requirement for clinical membership in AAMFT.
  • Successfully find employment in mental health settings, schools, justice centers, hospitals, and other agencies in which there is a primary focus on the mental health and well-being of couples and families.

Addressing the Needs of the State and the Region

Student enrollment has remained relatively steady over the past few years reflecting the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, report projecting faster than average growth in counseling positions at both the master's and doctoral levels through 2012 (Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2004-05 Edition). Growth in Ohio is expected to parallel the national picture as reflected by the Bureau of Labor Statistics report.

The Marriage and Family Counseling/Therapy master's program addresses this need by offering a high quality nationally accredited program for training marriage and family therapists to work in Ohio and across the nation.
