NBPTS Background, Core Propositions, and Standards

NBPTS logo
Background

The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan and non-governmental organization. NBPTS was originally established in response to A Nation at Risk and A Nation Prepared and is supported with funds from foundations, corporations, grants from the U.S. Department of Education, and candidate fees.

NBPTS: Five Core Propositions

The NBPTS is grounded on five core propositions which include the following:
  1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
  2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
  4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
  5. Teachers are members of learning communities.
Standards and the NBPTS

Based on the National Board’s core policy statement, What Teachers Should Know and Be Able to Do and the Five Core Propositions, standards have been created for each available certificate area. Based on these standards, teachers provide evidence of how they meet the high and rigorous standards in a two-step process that includes a school-site portfolio and exercises at the assessment center. The portfolio evidences a teacher’s practice through student work and knowledge, videotapes of classroom interaction, and written commentaries. The assessment center exercises focus on subject knowledge that are age and content-appropriate.
