Sports Science and Wellness Education

About the Department

Sport Science and Wellness Education is one of four departments within the College of Education. Our mission is to help improve the quality of life and health of individuals, families and communities. Specifically, our department focuses on the development of sport, exercise, health and wellness programs that promote physical activity and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle. In order to serve the University of Akron community we offer a variety of programs supporting our mission.

Undergraduate majors offered include physical education, exercise science, sport studies, and athletic training. In order to allow our undergraduates to specialize in a specific area of sport, exercise, and health promotion, our department offers undergraduate concentrations. Currently, students can pursue training in sport management/sport, exercise physiology, strength conditioning/coaching, pre-physical therapy. Specialization allows our students to increase their marketability to potential job employers by having the needed specific theoretical and applied knowledge.

At the graduate level the Department of Sport Science and Wellness Education offers majors in exercise physiology/adult fitness, sport science/coaching, and physical education. Along with offering academic programs our department is committed to conducting research related to the sport and exercise sciences, education, and health. Our department also provides service to the University of Akron community. Our programs for students and staff are highly influenced by the guidelines produced by the Centers for Disease Control and Healthy People 2010.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Sport Science and Wellness Education is to prepare students to become professionals in teaching and related fields of sport science and wellness based upon current professional standards and ethics. We educate our students to serve people of all ages, ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, and health conditions. The department shall apply its knowledge bases, through various technologies, to both research and service activities within the University setting and to community constituencies.
