The Job Interview The following suggestions may help you in preparing for the interview. For more information and assistance refer to the Office of Career Management.
A. Preparing for the interview- Be sure of the exact place and time of the interview.
- Be sure you have the complete name of the school and your interviewer and are able to pronounce the names correctly.
- Do some research on the school interviewing you.
- Prepare your questions before you go, such as:
- The community
- School board
- School philosophy
- School curriculum
- Supervisory assistance
- Auxiliary Services- guidance, reading
- Instructional materials
- Activities and organizations
- Evaluation
- Class size and teaching schedule
- Opportunities for professional growth
- Teacher salary and fringe-benefits contract
- Arrive at the interview early.
- Use good taste in personal appearance.
B. Participating in the interview- Greet the interviewer by name as you enter the room.
- In answering questions, be as specific and informative as possible. Avoid answering in a yes or no response.
- Tell those things about yourself which relate to the situation, such as background, education, and experience.
- Sit up in your chair, look your interviewer in the eye.
- Conduct yourself as if you were interested in getting the job you are discussing.
- Do not discuss salary until the end of the interview.
- Ask for an opportunity to visit the school before you sign a contract.
- Sense when the interview is about completed. Thank them for their consideration.
- Write a thank you letter to the interviewer thanking them for the opportunity to meet with them.
- Do not sign more than one contract.
C. Judging your acceptability
You will be judged on the following:
- General alertness and personality.
- Scholastic average and participation in activities.
- Portfolio evidence and student teaching report.
- Previous work experience.
- Qualifications for the position.
