Ten Favorite Suggestions for Student Teachers

  • Teach to the corners of your room.
  • Watch the use of "you guys," "you know," "okay," and "like."
  • For class activities, give clear instructions, criteria for successful completion, and regular time prompts.
  • Don't turn your back on the class.
  • Don't talk while the students are talking. Wait until they are quiet and attending before giving any instructions.
  • Remember to use wait time.
  • Don't distribute materials until you have given an explanation of how they will be used.
  • Provide visual prompting to support your instruction.
  • Find a way for the students to restate or review the objectives at the end of every lesson.
  • Circulate, circulate, circulate!
