College of Education Undergraduate Program Information The College of Education is an integral part of The University of Akron's tradition of preparing educated citizens for Ohio's future. Thousands of our graduates have served as educators of Ohio's students and throughout the United States. In addition, we have non-licensure programs at the undergraduate level in the areas of athletic training, sports and exercise science and technical education. Through its many courses, experiences, and organizations, the College of Education graduates qualified individuals prepared to be work in schools or other community settings. In keeping with The University's tradition of providing the highest quality education, the College of Education offers engaging programs designed to prepare a workforce and leaders for the future.
In order to prepare individuals for their future employment settings, it is our responsibility to instill within them a desire for lifelong learning and the ability to discern best practice based upon research. These practices include the application of knowledge and content, use of technology, inclusive and diverse practices and adherence to ethical standards. Taken in total, the four components of knowledge, diversity, technology and ethics contribute toward the development of individuals who are not only decision makers, but often leaders in all settings and with all individuals. We believe that these components are so important that we have identified them as the four components within our College of Education Conceptual Framework. In addition, we have identified Educator as Decision Maker as our theme.
With our Conceptual Framework and vision in mind, we have worked collaboratively both within the College and with other colleges to establish programs which are standard setting and based upon current research. In addition, in 2002 we were awarded national recognition by NCATE which is our accrediting body. Our courses and field experiences are sequenced in a manner that permits a developmental and logical progression through the program. Courses are taught by faculty who are both current in their areas of expertise and aware of current trends in the school setting.
We maintain a close and collaborative relationship with the Ohio Department of Education so our programs are aligned with requirements for licensure. We also offer undergraduate programs leading toward licensure in most areas offered by the Ohio Department of Education.
