Computer Literacy Assessment College of Education One of the criteria for admission to the College of Education is basic computer literacy. The Computer Literacy Assessment is offered in Zook Hall Room 435. No appointment is necessary. If you have questions about the test, please call (330) 972-8112 or (330) 972-2114 between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday.
When you come to take the assessment, bring a valid photo ID with you. You must have your own working e-mail address for this assessment (hotmail, aol, uakron,yahoo, etc.). The assessment takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, but its length depends on how comfortable and capable you are on a computer. You may choose to take the assessment on either a Macintosh or PC. Be certain to indicate this to the test administrator upon your arrival.
If you have taken any of the following courses with a grade of B" or better, you will be waived from this requirement:

2440:103 (2) Software Fundamentals
3460:125 (2) Descriptive Computer Science
7400:485 (3) Computer Applications in Family & Consumer Sciences
7500:298 (2) Technologies of Music Education (first offered Spring 2002) Testing Hours
Monday-Thursday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Scoring of the test is either "Pass" or "Fail." You may miss up to 4 items on the assessment and still "pass". The test administrators may clarify instructions but are not permitted to answer any questions that would tell the student how to complete a task. Any computer breakdown/malfunction should be reported to the test administrator immediately. There is no charge for the assessment, and you may take it only one time. You are permitted to retake the assessment one time if you fail it on the first attempt.If you should fail the test, you will need to pass one of the above-named courses in computer literacy, finishing with a grade of "C" or better.
Skills Tested
Computer competencies that are tested include (but are not limited to):
- Create a folder on a USB key
- Open a word processing file (Microsoft Word) and add some information
- Change margins in a word processing file
- Correct spelling errors in a word processing file
- Copy and paste within a word processing file
- Save a word processing file to a specific location once changes have been made
- Create a new word processing file
- Explain the functions of "save" and "save as"
- Change font face, size, and style in a word processing document
- Single or double space a word processing document as directed
- Use bullets to create a list in a word processing file
- Save a word processing document as a text-only (plain text) file
- Delete a file
- Rename an existing file
- Send an e-mail message with an attachment
- Access and search the Internet
- Copy and paste information from Internet sites to a word processing document
- Open a Power Point slide, put your name and address and save it
