Welcome to the Ohio CORE Foreign Language Program!

Program Overview

In 2006, the University of Akron’s (UA) College of Education was awarded funding from the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Board of Regents for the Ohio Core Program to build Ohio’s capacity for foreign language teaching. The Preparing Career Professionals for Teaching Foreign Languages (PCPTFL) Institute welcomed its first cohort group of 30 candidates in the fall of 2006. Many candidates finished the program, obtained their license to teach a foreign language, and are currently teachers in Ohio’s schools. In 2007 the UA team was awarded a second round of funding for the following two years. Twenty candidates were selected for the 2007-2008 program. In spring 2008, candidates will be selected for the 2008-2009 program.

Based on the success of the 2006-2007 PCPTFL Institute, UA will recruit mid-career professionals with a B.A. and major in Spanish and other critical language such as French, Chinese, and Arabic, to form a cohort group for 2008-2009, and prepare them for foreign language licensure.

The 12-month intensive program, with 24 credit hours of graduate level coursework, blends evening and Saturday classes with on-line course work to accommodate job commitments.

Links at the left will provide additional information for both the teacher candidates and others who may interest in the program. Please contact our program director Dr. Susan Colville-Hall, co-director Dr. Lynn A. Smolen, office staff Ms. Marcy Trew, or Ms. Qiong Zhou if you have additional questions.
