Online Mentors & School Districts The University of Akron’s College of Education would like to invite foreign language teachers to become a mentor teacher as part of its model institute, Preparing Career Professionals for Teaching Foreign Languages (PCPTFL Institute). Funded by the Ohio Department of Education, the PCPTFL Institute will make a difference by preparing candidates for the classrooms where there are not an adequate number of qualified teachers.
We are looking for foreign language teachers who are eager and willing to mentor in the training of mid-career professionals. Our candidates have a B.A. with a major in Arabic, Chinese, French, Spanish, or the equivalent and are seeking to become a foreign language teacher. Online mentors will provide them practical knowledge. Some of their questions may deal with cognition, motivation, classroom management, and using the standards in instruction and assessment.
Mentor teachers will engage a candidate in professional dialogue, encourage, evaluate materials and provide opportunities to work with students during the 12-month intensive program. The primary goal is to offer this candidate the opportunity to acquire knowledge about student-learning and second language acquisition and to develop the ability to teach the target language and culture to Ohio’s diverse students through instructional techniques and management practices. On-line mentors can help to ensure the success of PCPTFL Institute in preparing teachers for the classroom by responding to their inquiries once a week for at least 10 weeks both Fall and Spring semesters.
Please contact Marcy R. Trew for more information. We are posting an application form on the right that you can download and return via e-mail or by regular U. S. mail to: Marcy R. Trew, PCPTFL Institute, COE, University of Akron, Akron, OH 44325-4205.
