Program Summary

The University of Akron (UA) is poised to prepare its next cohort of foreign language teachers for Ohio’s schools.

UA recruits mid-career professionals with a B.A. and major (or equivalent) in Spanish, French, Chinese and Arabic, who are committed to obtaining a license to teach, and prepares them for foreign language licensure.

The PCPLT Institute trains “change of career professionals” through an intensive approach so they become qualified teachers with sound pedagogical knowledge.

The PCPFLT is a 12-month intensive program with 24 credits of graduate level coursework that culminates in teacher licensure. The format design is a flexible one that combines evening classes, on-line course work, Saturday classes and distance learning to ensure that individuals teaching in schools under a temporary license can continue teaching while studying and that mid-career professionals can continue working while in training. Upon satisfactory completion, candidates will be interviewed by local both and regional school districts that need foreign language teachers.
