The University of Akron’s Choose Ohio First Scholarship program will provide undergraduate tuition scholarships to promising financially disadvantaged incoming freshmen who intend to pursue a degree in a STEM field, including medical and education/teacher preparation programs. Scholarship will range in amount from $1,500 to $4,700 per academic year, and are renewable through the 2011-2012 academic year.
These scholarships are made possible through a grant awarded to a consortium of six partnering institutions – Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland State University, Cuyahoga Community College, Kent State University, University of Akron, and Youngstown State University – by the Ohio Board of Regents.
Program Eligibility
Eligible students will be incoming freshmen for the 2008-2009 academic year, and are planning to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in a STEM field. Examples of these fields include but are not limited to biology, physics, chemistry, computer science, astronomy, mathematics, geology, engineering, and teacher preparation programs.
Students must meet the federal eligibility guidelines and requirements to receive financial aid, be an established U.S. citizen, and a resident of Ohio. Contact the University of Akron Financial Aid Office to demonstrate financial need.The University of Akron

What are the program obligations?
Choose Ohio First scholarship recipients are required to:
- Maintain full-time status during the academic year
- Remain in good academic standing, minimum of a 3.0 GPA
- Degree pursuit in a STEM field
- Meet federal eligibility guidelines and requirements for financial Aid.
- Participate in Choose Ohio First program social, educational, and mentoring opportunities.
- Participate in surveys regarding the Choose Ohio First Scholarship Program with an understanding these surveys will be de-identified and cannot be used against the scholarship recipient. These surveys serve to better meet the needs of scholarship recipients, and all university students.
