College of Fine and Applied Arts James M. Lynn, Interim Dean Welcome to the College of Fine and Applied Arts at The University of Akron.
All that we do revolves around our mission to make life better for individuals and society. We accomplish our mission by providing students with excellent educational experiences that enrich their lives both personally and professionally.
We make life better in many other ways, too. For example, our School of Music presents more than 350 concerts each year that enable audiences to experience the joy of hearing wonderful music. Our School of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology is visited each year by more than 1,000 clients seeking assessment and treatment for speech, language, and hearing disorders. These clients include infants, adults with severe head trauma, and elderly persons suffering from age-related hearing losses. Our School of Social Work and our School of Family and Consumer Sciences assist clients from social service agencies throughout the community.
We also place a high premium on “learning by doing.” In the Myers School of Art, for example, students work side-by-side with faculty in well-equipped studios to create sophisticated computer imaging, provocative graphic designs, intriguing sculptures, and much more.
In addition, we are the front door through which The University of Akron greets the community. For example, E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall — a key component of the College — attracts more than 300,000 patrons annually. This flagship performance venue features world-renowned artists as well as College productions. WZIP-FM, the student-run radio station operated by our School of Communication, draws 114,000 listeners weekly, more than any other area station of its kind. Performances by our School of Dance, Theatre, and Arts Administration garner large audiences and rave reviews.
People are our most important aspect. Talented students and dedicated faculty, along with excellent programs and facilities, combine to make The University of Akron’s College of Fine and Applied Arts an outstanding academic environment and an invaluable community resource.
