Energy, exhilaration, and encouragement are fostered at The University of Akron’s Mary Schiller Myers School of Art. So are excellent programs, renowned faculty, and superb facilities. This exciting environment enables students to acquire the foundation, awareness, and skills to achieve their best as visual artists.

Beginning with their first day on campus, art majors receive personal guidance and encouragement. The Myers School of Art’s on-site academic adviser keeps an open door to help incoming and continuing students with everything from selecting the right courses to finding the campus bookstore. In addition, you will have your own faculty mentor to help with portfolios, exhibitions, internships, and the many other aspects of an enriching educational experience.
All students are strongly encouraged to present their portfolios for review prior to entry into the program. In addition, students are required to submit a portfolio for review at their sophomore, junior, and senior levels. These reviews are designed to encourage and guide students while ensuring that they are working to the School’s high standards.

In addition to being skilled and caring teachers, the faculty members are regionally and nationally renowned artists.

The average teacher/student ratio in The University of Akron’s Myers School of Art is 13 to 1.

Retention, graduation, and job placement rates are excellent at the Myers School of Art. Plus, many graduates continue their education at some of the finest graduate schools in the country. Numerous alumni have achieved national and international prominence as artists; two have received prestigious Guggenheim Fellowships and one has received the Rome Prize.

Folk Hall, home of the Myers School of Art, is among the largest and most impressive art facilities in the region. Studios are devoted to ceramics, commercial photography, computer imaging, drawing, graphic design, illustration, metalsmithing, painting, photography, sculpture, two dimensional design, and three-dimensional design. State-of-the-art equipment and technology is available throughout.

Vibrant contemporary exhibitions, speakers, artists-in-residence, travel opportunities, and special events expose students at the Myers School of Art to diverse expressions. Six galleries at The University of Akron exhibit a wide range of contemporary media. In addition to exhibiting works by faculty and students, the renowned Emily Davis Gallery in Folk Hall showcases work and lectures by visiting artists who are acclaimed nationally and internationally.

Tuition at The University of Akron is among the lowest in Ohio. Financial assistance is available in the form of generous scholarships, graduate teaching assistantships, graduate tuition scholarships, grants, loans, and part-time employment. In addition, the School offers its own scholarships, in addition to travel stipends.

The excellence of the Myers School of Art at The University of Akron is evidenced by prestigious accreditation. Since 1979, the School has been fully accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD).
