The Dance Program at The University of Akron combines traditional technical training with an academic program. Whether a student's goal is to perform, to teach the practical aspects, or to continue intellectual pursuits in the art of dance, he or she will be prepared in both the physical and intellectual areas of the discipline.

The Dance Program strives to provide students with a clear understanding of dance techniques in ballet, modern, and musical theatre; knowledge of the history of dance; pedagogical background for preparation to teach; opportunities for performance; and an awareness of the developments in dance medicine research.

The Ballet Center is home to the Dance Program, the University's Dance Institute, and the highly acclaimed Ohio Ballet. The Repertory Dance Company - the student dance company - performs works by faculty and recognized guest choreographers. The company presents two concerts annually on campus, and the program's Touring Ensemble furthers dance education with appearances in area public schools.

The Dance Institute is the program's professional institute for dance students ages 8 to 18. It provides professional training through the advanced level and helps students select further academic training.
The Ohio Ballet, the professional company in residence on campus, tours nationally and has appeared in Europe and South America. Students regularly observe and participate with the professional company in classes, rehearsals, and performances. The University of Akron is an institutionally accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Dance (NASD).

The Theatre Program at The University of Akron offers academic and professional preparation for students aspiring to enrich the human condition through the theatre.
Classroom and laboratory experiences prepare students in practical, historical, and critical aspects of the arts while fostering an appreciation of theatre as an art form.

This solid base is then built upon with specialization in the areas of acting, musical theatre, and design/technology. The school carefully balances curricular and co-curricular programming so that students gain practical experience in all aspects of the theatre. The established curriculum is enhanced by master classes, seminars, and special topic courses with guest artists from around the world. Recent guest lecturers and artists have come from England, France, and New York, as well as from recognized community and regional theaters.

The Arts Administration Program is another vital and vibrant component. Offered only on the graduate level, the program enables students to learn the business skills and theories of managing nonprofit performing and visual arts organizations. Boasting an outstanding placement rate, it is one of fewer than 30 programs nationwide offering a master's degree in arts administration
